June 6, 2003 - "Classic 404"
This particular strip even pre-dates 404's KeenSpace days. It was orignally posted as just another page on Kallixti.com, where my personal site used to live. Not being much of a coder at the time, I hadn't set up an automatic update system for my comics. As a matter of fact, one of the things that appealed to me about KeenSpace was the automatic update system.
Some comic strips break the fourth wall. As a gag strip,404 never even bothered to build it in the first place. From day one, David spoke directly to the audience. I blame Berke Breathed's Bloom County and the irrevocable damage it did to my young, blooming aesthetic. You'll see even more of Breathed's influence in future strips.
This strip was never actually inked - it was done in Ebony pencil. The hope was that the solid black of the pencil would pass very nicely for an actual inking job. I learned my lesson later and started actually inking the strips for web publication.
