June 7, 2003 - "Classic 404"

Ah, what a proud day. This strip actually marks the true "debut" of 404 on KeenSpace. Notice the hand-lettered titles? Yeah, those disappeared quickly. The strip actually was four panels long in its original form, instead of four panels square - and the title was over the second and third panels. My $50.00 scanner, however, required that I scan the frames in separately and then join them in the computer - something I'm honestly still not that good at. But it was functional. I made sure, however, that I never did the hand titles again - just because it was too much hassle for too little return.

I liked this strip. I felt it made for a nice introduction to David and Dana, the two main characters of the strip.

The "Tour Guide" shirt is yet another homage to Bloom County - Opus wore a similar shirt in a Bloom County storyline. Dana's belly shirt was modeled after the one that the character Ember wore when she first appeared in Wendy and Richard Pini's ElfQuest with the main difference being that Dana's shirt has both sleeves. The sun crest is the same, however. The "Re-Ed Center" label was a sick little joke of my own devising that never really went anywhere.
